Soluble Glass casting is the process in which "cast glass" objects, either functional or artistic, are produced by allowing molten glass to solidify in a mould, (a process called casting). This technique has been used since the Egyptian period. Modern cast glass is formed by a variety of processes such as kiln casting, or casting into sand, graphite or metal moulds.
I have been trying with somewhat limited sucess to sandcast glass in both open sand molds and closed sand molds.
I am using the same furnace to melt and anneal the glass but I do have another furnace I can use. Currently, I shake out and put the piece in the hot furnace and let it cool down overnight.
My biggest problem is the glass cools down rather quickly about halfway through the pour. It starts out pretty fluid but ends up like thick molassis. I was using old beer bottles which are plentiful in my shop but have now started using clear glass jars which seem to work better.
